In John chapter 4, we read the famous story of Jesus revealing Himself as the Messiah to the Samaritan woman at the well.
Transformed by her conversation with Jesus, she went back into the city and told people about this man who knew everything she had ever done, marveling, “Could this be the Christ?” (John 4:29).
The disciples, who had just returned from town to buy food, had seen Jesus speaking to the woman by the well.
Jesus begins to have a conversation with the disciples. Just imagine the scene…
The woman had gone into town and stirred everything up. Now, a mass of humanity was coming to the well to see who had so powerfully affected her.
Jesus said this to the disciples as He was looking at the throngs of people heading His way.
“Do you not say, ‘There are still four months and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest! And he who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together.” (John 4:35–36)
Jesus was not talking about wheat. When He referenced the harvest, He was talking about eternal life and a harvest of human souls.
Some people are always saying, “The harvest is coming.” I’m guilty of that to a degree myself. I do believe we are going to see a great harvest come into the kingdom of God globally.
Yet it is also harvest time right now.
People are ready at your work. The soccer field where you take your kids, at your school, in your neighborhood…people are ready.
So let me encourage you…lift up your eyes and say, “God, show me the people who are ready.” And when He shows you, be bold, step out and talk to them about Jesus.
Proverbs 11:30 says, “he who wins souls is wise,” and Daniel 12:3 tells us that “those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the firmament, and those who turn many to righteousness like the stars forever and ever!”
As we win souls to the kingdom, the rewards will be eternal.
