In a broken and sin-infected world, one of the wonderful promises of God is that He is our Healer. The Bible tells us this is in God’s very nature.
In fact, one of the names God gives to Himself is Jehovah-Rapha, which means, “I am the Lord who heals you.” God is, by His very nature, a healer—a God of health and wholeness.
The question is, “How does He heal?” If you look to Scripture, you’ll find a clear answer in Psalm 107:20…
“He sent His word and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.”
As you look at this verse, what’s interesting is that the word healed here is the word Rapha, the same word God uses to describe Himself as healer. And this verse gives us an important clue as to how God heals us.
That clue is this: “He sent His word and healed them.”
I believe this is God’s main method for bringing healing to His people. In fact, Proverbs 4:20–22 tells us,
“My son, give attention to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart; for they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh.”
God’s Word is medicine to our flesh. It is God’s method of bringing healing to His people.
And here’s the key: When God sends His Word to us, He always sends it in seed form. We find this truth in Mark 4, where Jesus told the parable of the sower…
Jesus talks about a sower who has a bag of seed, and he’s scattering that seed on the ground. Some of the seed fails to grow as it’s devoured by the birds, falls on shallow earth, or falls among thorns. But some seed falls on good ground and produces a crop that’s increased thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold.
In every case, what is the seed that the sower is sowing? Mark 4:14 tells us, “The sower sows the word.”
When God’s Word comes, it comes as a seed. How you respond to it determines the kind of harvest you’re going to get in your life.
