In John 8:29, Jesus makes a statement about His relationship with our heavenly Father that I think you and I wish we could make. He said, “I always do those things that please Him.”

Wouldn’t it be great if we could all say that? Imagine every decision, every thought, every word, every response being exactly what pleases the Father!

But even if we can’t achieve such perfection in this life, it should still be our aim. In fact, Paul points us in that direction in 2 Corinthians 5:6–9,

“So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. For we walk by faith, not by sight. We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord. Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him.”

Friend, your walk with God can flourish if you make it your aim to be well pleasing to Him.

So I want to challenge you to make that your aim—to be well pleasing to our Lord in every area of your life.

But you know what? You can’t aim at a target you can’t see. You can’t make it your aim to be well pleasing to Him if you don’t know what pleases Him!

There’s one source for understanding what does please our Father… and knowing what brings a smile to His face. That truth and direction is found only in His Word, the Bible.

It’s no wonder the devil will do all he can to keep us from reading and meditating on God’s Word. If he can succeed in keeping us out of the Bible, then he can keep us from knowing—and doing— those things that please the Father.

Friend, it’s to your advantage to find out what pleases God, as Paul points out in 2 Corinthians 5:10,

“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.”

Yes, there will come a day when you and I are held accountable for how we lived our lives here on earth. That’s why it’s so important to understand what pleases God, so we can live our lives accordingly.

So let me ask you: What’s your aim today? Are you aiming at what pleases God?
