In seasons of uncertainty—when headlines shake us, life takes unexpected turns, and fear tries to settle into our hearts—I often come back to a simple truth:
“This is my comfort in my affliction, for Your word has given me life.” (Psalm 119:50)
I know firsthand that God’s promises truly give life.
Some years ago, I was in a boating accident off the coast of Catalina Island. We struck a rock in the dark, and in a moment, my world changed.
I suffered massive trauma to my throat and jaw, bleeding on the brain, damaged arteries, a crushed larynx, and a dead vocal cord. Doctors told my wife they did not expect me to survive. Had I arrived at the hospital just fifteen minutes later, they said I would have bled out.
Those early days after the accident were difficult to put it mildly. But while I lay there, unable to speak or swallow, God had already spoken.
And it was His promises that carried me.
As I recovered, the Holy Spirit kept bringing me back again and again to the certainty of what God has said in His Word.
I had nothing in myself to rely on, but the promises of God remained.
Scripture tells us that God has given us “exceedingly great and precious promises” so that through them we may “partake of the divine nature” (2 Peter 1:4).
God’s promises connect us to His very nature—His goodness, His power, and His faithfulness.
They are the conduit through which God’s nature flows into our need.
His promises are not theoretical. They are not abstract. They are living and powerful, and I experienced them in a tangible way.
People around the world were praying the promises of God over me while I was unconscious. Later, as I slowly healed, I began to meditate on those promises myself.
I didn’t always feel strong. But God’s Word was strong. I didn’t always feel progress, but God’s Word continued to work in me.
